Teen charged in Oceanside break-in
A trace of blood left on top of a refrigerator led police to arrest an Oceanside teen Wednesday, charging him in a burglary committed July 22.
Nassau County police said Christopher Bonas, 19, of 3020 Long Beach Rd., was arrested near West Windsor Parkway and Fourth Street in Oceanside and was charged with second-degree burglary.
Police said Bonas broke a rear basement window to enter the home on Elm Street in Oceanside at about 6:30 p.m. However, police said that during the break-in, Bonas apparently cut himself - and left blood on the refrigerator.
He took an iPod, a PlayStation gaming system and a vase containing about $75 in coins, police said. But it was what was left behind that, police said, ultimately did him in.
A blood sample was collected by the Crime Scene Section and submitted to the Nassau County Department of Forensic Genetics DNA Laboratory.
It was unclear Thursday how the match was made - whether Bonas was asked to supply a DNA sample or whether police had previously acquired a sample of his DNA.
Bonas is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Hempstead.
