A 13-year-old was seriously injured after being hit while crossing Sunrise Highway on a foot-propelled scooter in Freeport, Nassau County police said Sunday.

The unidentified teenager suffered head and chest injuries when he was struck Saturday at 7:40 p.m. by a 2005 Buick at South Bayview Avenue. He was taken to a hospital.

The car was driven by a 63-year-old woman traveling west. Police said in a news release they did not believe any criminality was involved. The car was impounded for brake and safety checks.
