A Queens teenager was arrested and charged with criminal possession of a weapon early Sunday in Hempstead after he was found carrying a handgun and suffering from an apparent bullet wound, Nassau County police said.

William Carter, 18, of Far Rockaway, was injured by what appeared to be a bullet that had grazed his stomach, police said.

The wound was likely caused by another shooter and did not appear to be self-inflicted, police said.

Carter received medical treatment at the scene, they said.

A Nassau Third Squad police officer on patrol heard gunshots near 322 Washington St. at about 1 a.m., and responding officers found Carter at the scene, police said.

Police said they do not have descriptions for additional suspects and do not know how many others were involved.

Carter was not cooperating with the investigation, police said.

He is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead Monday.

Police have requested anyone with information on the shooting or possible additional suspects contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
