A teen was fatally stabbed late Monday night in Hempstead and police are searching for his killer.

Nassau County police said the victim, identified Tuesday afternoon as Jose Melvin Reyes, 18, of Hempstead, was stabbed at 11:24 p.m. on Elk Street.

Reyes was taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, where he died at 12:59 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

Police could not immediately say if a weapon was recovered and did not elaborate on the circumstances leading to the stabbing, saying only that the case is an active investigation.

Police are asking anyone who has information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.

All calls will remain confidential and callers are eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest.
