Two 15-year-old girls were injured, one seriously, when they were struck Tuesday evening by a sport utility vehicle while attempting to cross Long Beach Road in Oceanside, Nassau County police said.

The accident occurred about 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Weidner Avenue.

Police said the girls were struck by a 2010 Nissan Murano driven by a 51-year-old man in the southbound left lane of Long Beach Road. Two passengers were in the vehicle.

No one in the SUV was hurt, according to police.

Police said one girl was taken to a hospital for treatment of "serious injuries" to her face, leg and back.

The other girl suffered injuries to her ribs and pelvic area, police said. She also was taken to an area hospital.

The condition of the two girls was not known Wednesday. Police did not release the identities of anyone involved.

Police said the vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks after the crash. No one was charged, police said.
