The difference between Suffolk and Nassau with assessments
Suffolk County does not have Nassau’s problem with assessments and challenges because they are handled by the individual towns.
Suffolk pays out a little more than half as much in property tax refunds as Nassau, Suffolk Treasurer Angie Carpenter said. And that amount is charged back to Suffolk’s towns the following year.
Nassau spends more than $90 million a year. Carpenter said Suffolk refunded $49 million in 2008 and $54 million this year.
Carpenter said Suffolk towns do their own assessments, rather than the county — and when they settle tax protests, that’s the end of it. Nassau’s procedures often generate new challenges.
