Police are searching for at least one intruder who they said broke into a home in Oceanside late Wednesday night, but fled after one of the home's two elderly residents awakened and came to investigate.

Nassau County police said the burglary was at the home of a couple on Third Street at 11:15 p.m.

Police said the homeowners are both in their 80s.

They said the man awoke after hearing odd noises and went to investigate. He saw a light inside his darkened home, police said, and told police that a person or people then fled.

Police found that glass on a rear door had been broken and that an inner door had been forced open.

Police are asking that anyone with information contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
