An 18-year-old man walking home in Freeport Thursday night was attacked by three people, struck in the head with a handgun and robbed at gunpoint, Nassau County police said.

The incident occurred on Colonial Avenue at 10:19 p.m.

Police said as the victim walked home, a man passing by suddenly struck him in the head with a silver handgun. Two others, wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks, appeared and held him down, going through his pockets -- all as the original attacker held him at gunpoint, police said.

Police said the robbery trio stole the victim's cellphone. They then fled onto Powell Street, police said.

The victim, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital for treatment of facial and scalp lacerations. Police are asking anyone with information regarding the robbery to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential.
