The tires of 10 Town of North Hempstead vehicles were found slashed Monday morning.

Town spokesman Collin Nash said all of the vehicles - Ford sedans and sport utility vehicles - were used by the town's building department.

Other town vehicles were also parked in the lot, but only building department cars were damaged, leading to speculation that the vandalism was targeted.

According to Nash, a building department employee discovered the damage at 7 a.m. The vehicles were parked in a lot next to town hall in Manhasset.

Nash estimated damage at $4,000, including towing fees and replacements for 36 tires.

The Nassau police Sixth Squad is investigating the incident as felony criminal mischief because of the extent of damage, said Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone. The damage took place sometime between 5 p.m. Friday and about 6:45 a.m. Monday, he said.

"This was definitely intentionally done," he said. "Right now, we don't have any leads." Detectives were reviewing surveillance footage, Repalone said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
