Appeals court affirms conviction of LI mobster Tommy Gioeli

A Manhattan federal appeals court on Wednesday affirmed the 2012 racketeering conspiracy conviction of Long Island mob figure Tommy Gioeli of Farmingdale, who is currently serving an 18-year sentence.
Gioeli, 62, an alleged former acting boss of the Colombo family, was convicted in Brooklyn federal court of a conspiracy involving three different murder plots, including the 1992 killing of John Minerva in Massapequa during an internal family war.
On appeal, among other issues, he argued that the wife of informant and former family friend and crew member Dino Calabro, also of Farmingdale, had secretly collected evidence for the government by feigning social visits to Gioeli's wife.
But the appeals panel ruled that it was permissible for Andrea Calabro to get materials through a ruse of friendship, and that she acted on her own initiative rather than as a government agent in secretly grabbing a Gioeli address book.
