Train strikes, kills man; interrupted LIRR service restored
A man was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road train near the New Hyde Park station Friday, a spokesman for the commuter service said.
The man was not authorized to be on the tracks and was hit by an unoccupied eastbound train about 10:40 a.m., LIRR spokesman Aaron Donovan said.
The presence of investigators and rescue personnel at the scene has led to delays on three branches -- Oyster Bay, Ronkonkoma and Port Jefferson -- Donovan said.
In an email alert shortly after 11 a.m., the LIRR said service between Jamaica and Hicksville was temporarily suspended because a nonpassenger train hit an unauthorized person on the track in New Hyde Park.
Full service between Jamaica and Hicksville was restored shortly after 1 p.m., the LIRR said.
