A paving company employee helping to move portable traffic signs at a job site in Hicksville was struck and critically injured Wednesday by a company truck, Nassau County police said.

Police did not release the identity of the victim, described only as a 55-year-old male employee of Tri-State Paving of Carll's Path, Deer Park.

The man suffered what police called "multiple fractures and internal bleeding" and was taken to a hospital by Nassau police ambulance.

He remains in critical condition, police said.

The accident occurred at 2:48 p.m. near the intersection of South Oyster Bay Road and Walter Avenue, police said.

Police said the man had gone to assist fellow employees in attaching a portable traffic sign trailer to the hitch of a company truck when he stepped off the sidewalk -- and was struck by the truck, which was backing up.

Police said there is no apparent criminality and that the investigation is continuing.
