Why did the turtle cross the road?

The cops said they have no idea. But, they said, it certainly took its time trying to do so.

A seriously looooong time.

Nassau County police said one lane of northbound Shelter Rock Road was closed for one hour Thursday morning - during the morning rush hour, mind you - near the Long Island Expressway's south service road in North Hills because a turtle decided it was going to try to cross there.

It didn't, though it stopped traffic until it could be rescued and removed to safer ground.

Police have not identified what type of turtle was involved and could not immediately say how big it was.

The travel lane was reopened before 8:45 a.m.
