Two charged in Freeport robbery and kidnap

Two Freeport men were arrested on charges that last May they aided three others in stealing a man's car after hitting him in the head with a gun, robbing him and placing him in his car trunk, Nassau County police said.

Rashad Akins, 20, of 280 Pine St., and Kortney Washington, 19, of 87 Graffing Place, were arrested at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, police said. They were charged with kidnapping, robbery and assault. Akins was also charged with violation of probation, police said.

The 35-year-old victim had stopped a 2001 Mercedes-Benz at a traffic light at North Long Beach Avenue at West Seaman Avenue in Freeport on May 23 when three men approached his vehicle with handguns and pulled him from the vehicle, police said.

Two more men approached, one armed with a shotgun and the other a handgun, and the victim was struck in the head with a gun, police said.

The group emptied the driver's pockets and put him in the trunk of the vehicle, police said. After driving the car around for a short time, the men tied the victim's hands and feet with black duct tape, put tape over his mouth and left him in the backyard of a house on Jefferson Avenue in Lakeview, police said.

The man freed himself and walked to a friend's house. He was taken to an hospital for treatment of his head injury, police said.

The remaining suspects are between the ages of 18 and 20, and were wearing hooded sweatshirts, police said. Freeport Village police had located the two arrested Saturday while conducting an unrelated investigation, police said.

Akins and Washington are expected to be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
