Two people were injured Saturday in a kitchen fire that engulfed a house in Floral Park, officials said.
Firefighters arrived at 225 Oak St. just after 9:30 a.m. Eventually, five departments were needed to put out the flames, which melted siding in the back of the house and destroyed most of the first and second floors.
The fire likely started on the kitchen stove, said Joseph Whittaker, an investigator with the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office. "It looks like people in the house tried to fight the fire themselves," he said.
The heat spread from the kitchen to the rest of the first floor and then upward, Whittaker said.
The two people in the home, whose names were not disclosed, made it outside safely, firefighters said.
They were taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow to be treated for smoke inhalation and expected to be released.
