A 56-year-old man who fell overboard from a sailboat in Manhasset Bay was rescued Thursday evening by the U.S. Coast Guard with the assistance of North Hempstead Town Bay Constables, officials said.

The man, whose identity was not released, was not wearing a life jacket when he apparently was struck in the head by the boom during a sudden wind shift, the Coast Guard said.

He was not breathing when he was pulled from the bay waters when he was rescued after an emergency distress call at 8:22 p.m., but a Coast Guard EMT and a member of the bay constables administered CPR, reviving the man. The victim was taken to North Shore University Hospital in stable condition.

"Our agencies' quick response helped to save this man's life," Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class John Lowell, in charge of the crew from Coast Guard Station Kings Point, said in a statement.

The emergency responders also included medical specialists from the Port Washington Fire Department, who met the Coast Guard crew at the Manhasset town dock.
