Utility pole crash knocks out power in Uniondale

A serious single-vehicle crash early Monday morning in Uniondale knocked down a utility pole and caused area residents to lose power, police said.
Nassau police said the crash occurred on Jerusalem Avenue, just west of Uniondale Avenue, at about 6:30 a.m.
The driver, who was the lone occupant in the vehicle, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.
The crash closed Jerusalem Avenue between Greengrove and Edgemere avenues. The closure is in the vicinity of St. Martha's Catholic Church.
PSEG Long Island said the incident also left almost 700 area customers without power;emergency crews were assessing damage and working to restore electrical service. The utility said it hoped to restore power by about 8:15 a.m.
However, police said it estimated the road will wremain closed for about 3 to 4 hours — asked that motorists avoid the area and find an alternate route.
