A Uniondale man faces charges of attempted robbery and assault after striking another man in the face with a handgun, Nassau County police said Tuesday.

William Wilkinson, 22, of 101 Ruxton St., is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday at First District Court in Hempstead on charges of first- and second-degree attempted robbery and first-degree attempted assault.

Police said Wilkinson, armed with a silver handgun, left a gray Chevrolet at about 10:48 p.m. Saturday and approached the victim, 21, who was walking on Ruxton Street near Gerald Street.

Wilkinson called to the victim, and, fearing for his safety, the victim told him he had no property and tried to run. Wilkinson then struck the man in the face with the gun, police said.

The victim finally ran off and Wilkinson fired several shots, police said.
