Thefts from unlocked vehicles are on the rise, prompting Nassau County officials on Wednesday to warn residents to always keep them locked.

The thefts are happening at all hours, so police are advising that vehicle owners take some preventive steps, according to a news release from County Executive Edward Mangano and acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter.

In addition to always keeping vehicles locked -- even when they are parked in garages -- the news release offered other tips:

** Don't leave smart keys or spare keys in or near your vehicle.

** Don't leave valuables in the vehicle.

** Keep home exteriors and driveways well-lit.

** Close vehicle windows completely when they are parked.

** Don't leave remote control garage-door openers in vehicles, especially if they are parked in driveways.

Police also said to report any suspicious activity by dialing 911.
