A Wading River man was arrested Saturday and charged with assaulting a police officer as he was being arrested on suspicion he had stolen electronics from a Hicksville department store, Nassau police said.

A police officer saw Charles Cimino, 43, of 299 Hidden Acres Path, running from the Sears store on North Broadway at 3:57 p.m., pursued by a store security agent, police said.

Cimino ran across Broadway into the parking lot of the Broadway Mall, where the officer attempted to stop and arrest him, police said.

Cimino struggled with the officer, but was eventually subdued and arrested, police said. The officer cut his finger during the struggle and was taken to a hospital, where he received four stitches.

Cimino, who police said is suspected of taking a Sony home-theater receiver from the store, was charged with second-degree assault, petit larceny and was found to have an unrelated warrant charge from violating an ordinance in the Town of Hempstead, police said.

At his arraignment on Sunday, Cimino was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail or $2,000 bond, which he posted. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
