Walmart clerks charged in $225G scam
Four Walmart cashiers were among those charged in a scam involving Citibank gift cards that had been re-encoded with stolen credit information, Nassau County police said Wednesday.
Six people were arrested Tuesday at the Walmart on Jerusalem Avenue in Uniondale at about 3:20 p.m., police said. Four of those arrested -- Andrea Kindle, 21, of Frederick Avenue, Roosevelt; and Sherrill Greene, 26, Tiffany Kinard, 24, and Chenelle Overstreet, 26, all of Terrace Avenue in Hempstead -- worked as cashiers at the Walmart.
The other two arrested were Emmanuel Collins, 24, of 57th Avenue in Corona, Queens; and Ramell Green, 21, of 166th Street in Jamaica, Queens.
They are accused of bilking Walmart of $125,000, while Citibank lost $100,000.
Police said Overstreet, Greene, Kinard and Kindle were all charged with third-degree grand larceny, while Collins was charged with second-degree grand larceny and three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. Green was charged with second-degree grand larceny and 12 counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
All are scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said the scheme involved the purchase of merchandise at the Walmart using gift cards whose magnetic strips had been re-encoded with stolen credit information.
It was not immediately clear how long the alleged scheme had been in operation, what kind of items were purchased or how the alleged scheme was uncovered.
