A Pennsylvania man was killed after he drove the wrong way on the Wantagh State Parkway in Hempstead and struck another vehicle head-on shortly before dawn Thursday, State Police said.

Alexander Simek, 73, of Albrightsvlle, Pennsylvania, was driving a 2019 Chevrolet north on the Wantagh's southbound lanes when he hit a 2014 Honda driven by Jay Lasker, 54, of North Bellmore, police said.

Simek died of his injuries at the scene and Lasker was taken to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for lower body injuries, State Police said in a statement.

All southbound lanes were closed after the approximately 5:15 a.m. collision, which occurred between Exit W4E, for the Southern State Parkway, and Exit W5, for NY 27 or Sunrise Highway, officials said. The parkway was shut down for several hours while State Police investigated the accident. The lanes have since reopened.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and the State Police are asking for anyone with information to call 631-756-3300.
