Highway worker seriously injured on Wantagh Parkway, cops say

A highway maintenance worker placing traffic cones on the Wantagh State Parkway was seriously injured Tuesday morning in a crash that temporarily closed all southbound lanes of the parkway in Wantagh.
Police said the one-car crash took place today at 8:13 a.m. on the parkway southbound, at Exit W4.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the collision occurred when the operator of a 2017 Honda Accord struck a 51-year-old male highway maintenance worker, who is contracted by New York State Department of Transportation, while placing orange traffic cones in the right lane,” a State Police news release said.
The worker and the operator were taken to a hospital.
The crash scene was south of the intersection with the Southern State Parkway and just south of the footbridge serving Wantagh High School.
State Police said the southbound Wantagh was reopened at 1:17 p.m.
State Police request anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call them at (631)756-3300.
