Long Islanders heading back to work after the Thanksgiving break are likely to have extra reason to feel a bit glum, with temperatures forecast to hit the low 60s today.

But don't kid yourself: Monday's forecasted temps and Sunday's warm temperatures aren't necessarily a sign of a warmer winter to come.

"Unfortunately we can't really predict what January is going to be like because it's 60 degrees today," said Lauren Nash, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

What we do know is the spate of warm weather is predicted to continue through Tuesday, with

Sunday's unusually high temperatures were caused by a high-pressure system coming in from the south, Nash said. November is on track to be warmer than average -- about five degrees warmer overall in Islip, Nash said.

But the cool weather is returning.

After a similarly mild Monday, temperatures will drop gradually as the week progresses. Rain is predicted for Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday as highs return to the 50s -- more typical of November, Nash said.

Saturday, temperatures in Islip reached 66, breaking the previous record of 65 that was set in 1999, Nash said.
