A major thoroughfare through the Five Towns has reopened following a water main break Monday, but police said Tuesday that drivers can expect continued delays through the area, with construction and repairs to the road likely to take days to complete.

Nassau County police said the break was reported around 5:30 a.m. Monday, forcing the closure of Sheridan Boulevard in the area near Nassau Avenue in Inwood.

On Tuesday, police said that while the road has been reopened, traffic is being limited to one direction at a time near the damaged main, with a flag crew directing vehicles.

It was not clear how long it would take for repairs to be completed and the road fully reopened, police said, adding intermittent closures could last the rest of the week.

The road is one of the main connectors to the Rockaways, running between Nassau Expressway and Beach Channel Drive.
