Way to Go: Alec Visslailli, Carle Place

Alex Visslailli, 18, a senior at Carle Place High School, is a standout volunteer for tackling a series of service projects during the past year, including the mentoring of inner-city kids in Dallas and renovation of a courtyard at his high school.
A Carle Place High School senior with a passion for volunteering has made his mark both far away and in his own community.
Alec Visslailli, 18, tackled a series of service projects during the past year, including the mentoring of inner-city kids in Dallas and renovation of a courtyard at his high school.
Last summer's Dallas project involved a group of about 30 teens nationwide assisting children ages 4-16 through the nonprofit HOPE worldwide. Activities included playing sports such as Frisbee and football, as well as undertaking arts and crafts projects.
"The kids came from places that weren't the best," Visslailli said. "Our main role was to serve as a brother or sister."
In the courtyard renovation and beautification, he and about 20 classmates installed a stone path and plantings. The project, which Visslailli spearheaded, was part of the community service component of his Eagle Scout Award, the highest rank attainable for a Boy Scout.
His other efforts include preparing meals at the Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park and serving as president of his school's Student Organization.
Visslailli also is a recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award, which honors those who volunteer for hundreds of hours.
