For Justin Eith there is no greater feeling than lending a hand to those in need.
The senior at H. Frank Carey High School in Franklin Square recently collected about 20 boxes' worth of school supplies -- from notebooks to crayons and scissors -- to be distributed to local underprivileged children and their families through Catholic Charities.
Eith, a Boy Scout, said the collection was part of his effort to earn his Eagle Scout rank.
"I just love helping people out," said Eith, 17, who said he decided to collect school supplies after tossing around some possible ideas with his mother, Kim, an elementary school teacher in New York City. "It's one of my most favorite things to do."
To kick off the effort, Eith said he set up collection boxes at the John Street, Polk Street and Washington Street elementary schools in Franklin Square, as well the high school. Following those two-week collections, he moved the boxes to a local Stop & Shop, Walgreens, the Franklin Square public library, and the hall of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2718, also in Franklin Square.
He said Catholic Charities was amazed by the volume of items he delivered.
Eith plays violin and is a member of Carey's football and wrestling teams.
