Way to Go!: Kevin Lopez of Wisdom Land Middle School
By MICHAEL R. EBERT. Kevin Lopez, a sixth-grader at Wisdom Lane Middle School in Levittown, represented North America in the 2nd Children's Drawing Contest, an international art contest sponsored by the International Marine Environment Protection Association.. The contest challenged kids ages 5 to 13 to create a poster under the theme: "Let's change the habits, not the climate.". "I like to draw and I like the environment, so I thought why not put it together," Kevin said.. To reach the international level, Kevin was first named winner of the North American level last year from among roughly 70 entries continentwide.. His poster - made with crayons and markers - depicts a polluted sea with marine animals picketing and a fisherman asking, "What have we done?". His piece will appear on a compilation poster featuring the other finalists' artwork.. "I got a beluga whale, too," said Kevin, 11, explaining that Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut sent him a certificate indicating it had adopted a whale in his name. He also met Robert Ballard, a former U.S. Navy commander credited with discovering the Titanic wreck in 1985.. Kaylee Hernandez of Summit Lane Elementary in Levittown was one of the contest's 10 national finalists.
