A New Cassel woman who had drugs in her car was arrested Tuesday after she and another driver collided at a Westbury intersection, police said.

Ethel Mae Edwards, 43, was charged with vehicular assault after her 2010 Toyota Corolla crashed into a work van being driven by a 45-year-old man at the intersection of Brush Hollow Road and Hillcrest Drive about 10 a.m. Tuesday, police said.

The man was trapped in his van and had to be removed with help from the Nassau County Police Department's emergency service unit and the Westbury Fire Department, police said. He is in critical condition at a hospital.

After the crash, police said they found what they thought was heroin and crack inside Edwards' car, and arrested her. She was taken to a hospital and will be arraigned later, police said.

Edwards, of 226 Garden St., was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, second-degree assault and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
