A Nassau jury Tuesday convicted a Westbury man of raping a 10-year-old girl in a public bathroom and then stabbing her father to death after he called the police to report the rape, prosecutors said.
Ulises Bonilla, 23, was found guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree rape and other charges, prosecutors said. He faces up to 25 years to life when Nassau County Judge George Peck sentences him Feb. 16.
Prosecutor Zeena Abdi said during the trial that on Sept. 24, 2010, Bonilla lured a 10-year-old girl into the bathroom at Martin "Bunky" Reid Park in New Cassel and raped her. Two of the girl's friends, who were with her at the time, ran to her home and told her father about the attack, Abdi said.
But when the girl's father called police, his daughter denied to them she had been raped, and police did not arrest Bonilla, prosecutors said. Later that night, the girl's father, whom Newsday is not naming because his daughter is a rape victim, confronted Bonilla at a Westbury deli, Abdi said.
Four days later, Bonilla went to the father's house. As the two men argued about the rape, Bonilla pulled out a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim's father 12 times, prosecutors said.
Bonilla fled but was caught by Nassau police in Manhattan's Penn Station about two months later, prosecutors said.
Bonilla's lawyer, Daniel Millman, of Roslyn, could not be reached for comment Tuesday. However, at trial he said there was no physical evidence showing that his client had actually stabbed the girl's father.
