Marine bureau officers rescued a windsurfer from the chill waters of Cold Spring Harbor after the man had found himself in distress while battling strong, gusting winds Wednesday, Nassau police said.

Police said the crew of Marine 7 responded to the distress call around 5:15 p.m. and found the windsurfer, whose name was not released, "near exhaustion" and at risk of hypothermia. The officers — Thomas Siesto, Brendan McGovern, Parsa Karmi and Sgt. Scott Amberman — were able to rescue the windsurfer from the water and safely transport him back to shore, where he was taken to a local hospital for treatment by members of the Cold Spring Harbor Fire Department, police said.

Suffolk police and a Suffolk police helicopter also were involved in what Nassau police described as "a coordinated search and rescue effort."
