A woman crossing the street in Hempstead was killed in a hit-and-run accident Monday morning, Nassau police said.

The 88-year-old victim was in the southbound lanes of Peninsula Boulevard near Fulton Avenue when she was struck about 6:40 a.m., police said.

She suffered head trauma and was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre, where she was pronounced dead at 7 a.m., police said. Her name was held pending notification of relatives, police said.

Homicide detectives said they do not have any description of the vehicle involved and are looking for witnesses and the public's help. Anyone with information may contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477.
