Woman charged with stealing from charity
An office manager for a Long Island charity was arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing more than $130,000 from the Bethpage-based organization, police said.
Merline Campbell, 45, of Baldwin, employed at Sustainable Long Island, was charged with larceny, identity theft, defraud and petty larceny. She was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday in First District Court, Hempstead.
Campbell used the charity's credit cards to make personal purchases between August 2010 and February, and then used company funds to pay those credit card bills, Nassau police said. The total loss is in excess of $130,000, police said.
Officials with the organization could not be reached for comment.
The website for the organization, founded in 1996 says, "Sustainable Long Island's mission is to promote economic development, environmental health and social equity for all Long Islanders, now and for generations to come ..."
