Woman hit by car after stepping into road

A 26-year-old woman was killed when she stepped off a curb on Jericho Turnpike in Syosset Wednesday night -- and was struck by a sport utility vehicle, police said.

Nassau County police said Jennifer Jenkins, 26, of Manorville, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the 2010 Ford was not identified by police and was not injured.

Police said it appears Jenkins may have been distracted.

No charges were filed.

The accident occurred at 9:05 p.m. west of Woodland Avenue, police said. Police said Jenkins stepped off a curb and into the roadway in front of the eastbound SUV.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
