An 81-year-old woman who was hit by a van Saturday and critically injured as she attempted to cross a street in Hempstead, has died, Nassau police said.

The 2019 Ford cargo van hit the victim, identified Monday by police as Apolonia Montejos, of Hempstead, about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to police. She was crossing Fulton Avenue after walking north on Bennet Avenue when she was hit, police said.

Montejos was transported to a hospital where she died, police said.

The driver of the van, which was making a left turn from Bennet onto Fulton when it struck Montejos, remained at the scene and called 911, according to police.

The Nassau police Highway Patrol Unit responded Saturday to perform brake tests. The investigation is ongoing.
