A woman's body was discovered by Malverne police and firefighters responding to a house fire Thursday evening, the fire department said.

Malverne Fire Chief Dan Morgan said the victim, Nancy Mastrangelo, 62, of Malverne, was discovered in a first-floor bathroom inside the Linden Street house by Malverne police and firefighters during their initial search of the two-story home.

Those first responders removed her from the building, he said, and Malverne ambulance EMTs attempted to revive her but their efforts failed, he said. She was pronounced dead about 8 p.m.

Dave Gildea, a spokesman for the fire department, said about 50 responding firefighters from the Malverne and Lynbrook departments were able to confine the fire primarily to the bathroom.

They were able to bring the blaze under control within five minutes of the 7:32 p.m. alarm, Gildea said.

The fire was under investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office, but the cause was not suspicious.
