Woman struck by LIRR train

A woman was struck by a Long Island Rail Road train in Queens, Tuesday night, causing temporary delays and cancellations in both directions on the Port Washington Branch, officials said.

The woman was taken alive from the accident site at the Douglaston LIRR station to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, according to Aaron Donovan, a railroad spokesman.

She was struck at 9:20 p.m. by the 8:48 p.m. train from Penn Station, as it was entering the Douglaston Station, Donovan said.

That train was cancelled there, and passengers were transferred to buses, he said.

Both eastbound and westbound "trains already in motion were being held at the respective stations," Donovan said. "Trains scheduled to depart at 9:48 eastbound and 9:39 westbound were cancelled."

The delayed trains resumed at 10:03 p.m. and the LIRR said there were one hour residual delays.
