Nassau police shut down an Inwood neighborhood for hours late Sunday afternoon after an apparent shooting that ended in the arrest of a wounded suspect.

By nightfall, police had provided no details of the shooting, which occurred near Mott and West End avenues just before 3 p.m.

But residents and neighbors described hearing a cluster of gunshots followed nearly 30 minutes later, by the surrender of a man who said he had been wounded.

Karen Hall, 44, had been inside her Stanley Street home when she heard what she initially thought were firecrackers. Soon after, a police officer with his gun drawn was urging her to remain inside.

She and her boyfriend then saw officers with long rifles walking her block, as a helicopter hovered above. Finally, a man in a red shirt walked out from behind her home and into the street with his arms raised, Hall said.

"It was like a scene out of a movie," she said.

The man, who was quickly handcuffed, could be heard screaming, "I'm shot! I'm shot!" Hall said. An ambulance arrived and took him away.

At dusk Sunday, police kept about a four-block radius of the neighborhood shut down as evidence was collected. From the sounds of the gunshots and the areas that remained closed off, residents surmised that the shooting and confrontation originated on Mott Avenue and the suspect fled into yards on nearby Stanley Street, where he was arrested.

Police would not comment on residents' conclusions.
