Yousef Shaker, Lauren Stephan, LIE crash victims, ID’d by cops
Nassau County police identified two people killed Monday night when they were struck by an SUV while outside their disabled car after a crash on the Long Island Expressway.
Police said Yousef Shaker, 20, of Ridgewood, Queens, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lauren Stephan, 18, of Maspeth, Queens, died at Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, her family had said.
Shaker was driving a 2004 BMW west when the car struck a guardrail, crossed over to the HOV lane and struck the median between exits 40 and 39 in Old Westbury, family said. Police said Shaker and Stephan, who was a passenger in the car, got out of the vehicle and were standing near the crash scene when a 2016 GMC Yukon struck them.
Police said the BMW’s other passengers suffered non-life threatening injuries. Brianna Perez, 18, of Bushwick, Brooklyn, who was identified by family members, was treated for a concussion and a fractured shin, shoulder and ankle, her mother said.
A second surviving passenger was not identified but was described as a 19-year-old man from Queens who sustained minor injuries.
The Yukon’s driver was not identified because police said no criminality was involved, but a source told Newsday he was a 33-year-old off-duty NYPD Highway Patrol officer. That driver suffered minor injuries and remained at the scene, police said.
