Long Island

The homes of ship captains and merchants, some two centuries old, have been lovingly restored and reincarnated into shops and restaurants on Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor, noted Judy Hogan, treasurer of Cold Spring Harbor Main Street Association. 
Cold Spring Harbor is notable because its entire business district is on the National Register of Historic Places, Hogan explained. 
Holiday festivities start the first week in December with a Window Display Contest, followed by the fire department’s tree lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. on Dec. 3. There’s also a Shop-A-Thon, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 15, when people are asked to dress in festive attire, and from 1 to 3 p.m. on Dec. 19, Santa will stroll Main Street and take photos with kids aboard a historic fire truck at the Fire House Museum. 
After 25 years in business, Lina Agosti, owner of Whimsey at the Beauty Tree (65 Main St., 631-367-7675), always delights in seeing patrons’ reactions to her shop. 
"Everybody comes in and says, ‘You have beautiful things.’ It really makes my day," she said. 
A few of those beautiful things include embossed leather handbags from Patricia Nash; Ayala Bar jewelry with mineral stones and crystals from Israel; Murano glass jewelry; Croatian linen pillows and table runners; diffusers and candles by Via Mercato; exquisite velvet and viscose jackets from Aris A.; Michael Michaud tableware and jewelry that captures details of nature and is made in Bay Shore; Bolivian French Knot gloves and hats; Fabulous Furs faux-fur jackets and loungewear; Florentine gold-plated wood trays and stationery; Mary Meyer stuffed animals; and "Finding Gratitude" and other message books.

"It smells really good in here," announces the sign in front of Terra (85 Main St., 631-498-6077, <a href="https://terracoldspring.com/">terracoldspring.com</a>). 
"Everybody comes in and says it," said owner Stephanie Rooney. 
Janina Stefanow, 50, of Middle Village had stopped in at Terra to buy earrings, soap and body lotion. "My cousin lives in Syosset, and I like shopping here," she said. 
One of the newest shops in the village, Terra is mostly a home décor shop with an assortment of throw pillows (some with messages), candles and home fragrances, cheese and charcuterie boards, Thymes Frasier Fir scents, Mermaid Kisses, K. Hall Designs and Apiary lotions, soaps and candles, Etú Home platters and Barefoot Dreams soft blankets. 
Some of Terra’s unique items are exquisite handmade Himalayan driftwood tray candles and pictures frames, and trays with spectacular photos from Los Angeles photographer Gray Malin. 
For the holidays, Rooney said, "We’re trying to make it more a one-stop shop for gifting." 
At Casa Chetta (60 Main St., 315-274-3470, <a href="https://casa-chetta.myshopify.com/">casa-chetta.myshopify.com</a>), Lilly Cavaliere curates items for the home from her native Argentina and around the world that you won’t find in other stores. Among them, an imposing 51-inch Sailor’s Knot round mirror framed by beige rope stretched over an iron frame. 
"I have seven customers waiting for this mirror," Cavaliere said. 
You’ll find a teak root bunching cube/side table from Thailand; Vietnamese banana leaf coffee table and console, and rattan/mother of pearl trays; poufs and ottomans from India; a banana tree bark and teak midcentury-modern chair; white textured ceramic vases and decorative platters from Legacy; an assortment of baskets from Africa, including some made from wicker mixed with denim; banana leaf trays; and Argentine table runners, pillows and throws. 
"All the time, I try to find different, different," said Cavaliere. "Sometimes it’s hard, but it’s my job."

A boutique for kids featuring Brio toys, Jellycat stuffed animals, children’ books, toys, clothes for babies to preteens, blankets, bibs, dress and First Communion clothes. Top-sellers this season are Widgeon fleece jackets for infants and toddlers.

Bellport gets into the holiday spirit with a soup-tasting contest at the four corners of the village on South Country and Station roads on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 27, from noon to 2 p.m. And entries for the annual wreath contest will be displayed throughout the village starting Dec. 4. That evening, Santa will lead a holiday parade leaving the firehouse at 5:30 p.m., followed by a tree lighting at 6 p.m. 
"Bellport has more stores in a short walking distance than larger communities," said LuAnn Thompson, vice president of Bellport Chamber of Commerce, describing the shops as unique and quaint, much like the village itself. 
On weekends during the holiday season, you can find someone playing holiday music and carols on the piano stationed inside Copper Beech (133 S. Country Rd., 631-286-0202, <a href="https://copperbeechbythesea.com/">copperbeachbythesea</a>). The eclectic shop, owned by designers Thomas O’Brien and Dan Fink, reflects their refined aesthetic sensibilities. 
Among the assorted artisan foods, there are French and Belgian chocolates, a variety of European chutneys and tapenades, pasta, oils, vinegars, mustards, cookies, crisps and chips. 
There are Portuguese soaps, Coqui perfume from Mexico, Etoile towels, Kent combs, lamps, bowls, barware, throws, pillows, and an array of items for cooking and entertaining. 
"I’m looking for a basket to put firewood in," said Jackie Dennis, 42, of Brookhaven, who often shops at Copper Beech for kitchenware, as she perused a selection of handmade baskets in all shapes and sizes.

Fans of the show "Schitt’s Creek" will feel right at home at Bellport Apothecary (151 S. Country Rd., 631-431-6825, <a href="http://[https://www.facebook.com/Bellportapothecary151/">facebook.com/Bellportapothecary151</a>), where episodes of the show play on a loop all day on a TV monitor up front. 
Owner Giovanni Naso, an interior designer, was so inspired by the Netflix show’s fictional Rose’s Apothecary that he decided to open an apothecary of his own. 
Naso's store carries Joy Lane Farm, Bidwell, Pretty Public, Archipelago Botanicals, Lollio and Tokyo Milk skin-care lines, handmade pottery, throw pillows, balms, perfumes, Paddywax apothecary candles, and Bellport-made organic soap and honey. 
Stopping in the shop for a cup of its aromatic coffee, Tara Broillet browsed the shop for Christmas and birthday gifts. 
"I was looking for different and interesting pieces of jewelry," said Broillet, 41, of Brookhaven. 
Much of the jewelry has decorative crystals, which many believe have healing properties. 
"It’s jewelry with intention. Beyond its being pretty, it’s serving an energy purpose for you," said Sharon Munson, store manager. 
At 51, The Village Silversmith Gallery (149 S. Country Rd., 631-286-1660, <a href="https://www.villagesilversmith.com/">villagesilversmith.com</a>) is the oldest retail shop in the Village of Bellport. 
As the name suggests, silver is the star here, but you’ll also find a variety of gold jewelry, some mixed with precious or semiprecious stones and most of which are created by owner Dwight Trujillo. 
Trujillo’s more spectacular pieces are part of his nautical collection — a combination of silver and beach glass, and nautical-themed pieces, such as anchor earrings, a sea horse ring and a starfish necklace. 
"I try to do one-of-a-kind pieces, especially at Christmas, when people are looking for a very special gift," Trujillo said, adding that he often works with Western Jasper stones and creates a lot of hammered metal repoussé work. 
The shop also carries jewelry handmade elsewhere, mostly in the American West; ceramic bowls, plates, candelabras and vases; steel sculptures by Trujillo; and works by local artists, from abstract paintings by Roberta Gugliotta of East Patchogue to avian wood sculptures by John DiNaro of Brookhaven; and wooden candelabras and other pieces by woodworker David Ebner of Brookhaven.

Since 2010, Bay Shore has held its Winter Festival, a decadeslong tradition, on Small Business Saturday. This year, from noon to 3 p.m on Nov. 27, Bay Shore High School’s Harmonaires carol up and down Main Street. Then, local choirs will sing as Santa and Frosty distribute gifts at the bandshell on East Main Street. 
"It’s a splendid day," said Donna Periconi, president of Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce. "We have thousands of people who come." 
Another mainstay of the hamlet is Willy Nilly Trading Co. (153 W. Main St., 631-666-4488, <a href="https://www.willynillytrading.com/">willynillytrading.com</a>), a 21-year-old store with a bit of everything for the whole family. 
"We do have a following that’s Long Island-wide," said Marilyn Schulman, owner. "It’s not just local." 
Designer jewelry lines include rhodium-plated classic designs from John Medeiros, UNO de 50 contemporary pieces from Spain, simulated diamonds from LaFonn and moderately priced Ella Stein diamond jewelry. 
"You could give a gift of diamonds without breaking the bank," Schulman said. 
There are fun Dot &amp; Dash Design’s Morse code bracelets and necklaces with upbeat sayings like "Choose Joy" and "Sixty &amp; Sassy." 
The "cozy department" features loungewear and throws as well as wraps and ruanas for women, Nepalese handmade hats and gloves, and Sherpa jackets. 
In accessories, there are Hobo leather handbags, and fabric bags from Spartina 449 and Vera Bradley; in décor, signs and framed prints; in entertainment, unique Nora Fleming and Mariposa polished-aluminum platters. 
For scents, choose from Michel Design Works candles, fragrance, lotions and soaps or Inis fragrances from Ireland. For the peewee set, there are infant togs, books, JellyCat and Bearington baby stuffed animals, and Earth Nymph baby clothes with Long Island tags. Look for sweatshirts, throws, home décor and handbags proudly imprinted with "Long Island," and chocolate bars made in Huntington. 
"I love this store. This is my second time here in two weeks," said Elaine Dalman, 75, of Bay Shore, adding that on her last visit, she spent $200 at Willy Nilly’s Christmas shop next door.

"They’re this generation’s version of Beanie Babies," said owner Kevin Demspey. "Name any franchise, whether it be movies, TV, video games, comics, etc., there’s a 90% chance there’s a Pop of them," 
Dempsey also carries DC Multiverse, Power Rangers and a zillion other action figurines, "for collectors, children-at-heart or for something to put on your shelf." 
There are superhero sticker and coloring books, The Blue Fame, The Last Ronin and other independent-label comic books, graphic novels, Godzilla figurines, Monopoly Ghostbusters edition, Joker, Mega Man and Star Wars piggy banks, and 8-, 10-, 12- and 20-sided dice. 
For a sense of serenity, chill to the spa music and breathe in the scented air at Breathe Gifts (135 E. The store specializes in crystals — every type, shape and size — which are believed to have physical, spiritual and emotional healing powers, explained Jamie Aponte, gems and minerals manager. 
"I tell people, ‘The crystal chooses you. Nine out 10 times, it’s something that you needed," Aponte said. 
A Breathe devotee, Ryan Scheriff, 19, of Babylon, said the crystals have helped him get through tough emotional times. 
His mom, whom he recently introduced to the store, concurred. "I’ve gone through quite a bit in the last three or four years," said Joy Scheriff, 62. 
Breathe carries hand-poured Lunastry Intuition candles decorated with dried flowers, gems and sparkles. Other items for spiritual living are moldavite jewelry, hemp seed massage candles, Buddhas, singing bowls, incense, tarot cards, chimes, dream catchers, and books on mineralogy, dreams and healing.

The boutique offers aromatherapy candles and other health and wellness products; a skin-care line, comfy throws, shawls, slippers and sweaters; men’s ties, cuff links, and johnnie-O and Fish Hippie clothing as well as made-in-Bay Shore decoupage oyster shells. 
Earth ‘N Vessel Pottery Studio (67 W. Main St., 631-665-0060, <a href="https://earthnvessel.com/">earthnvessel.com</a>). This studio and shop sells works from its 10-member cooperative. Everything — mugs, vases, bowls, plates, lidded jars, serving platters and more — is on sale for the month of December.

Holiday Shopping Destination: Islandwide appeal in Bay Shore

Like the Peconic River that runs through it, Riverhead keeps rolling along with new stores that add ethnic diversity and Hamptons elegance to a historic downtown set for a major renewal project. 
Riverhead’s downtown has long been anchored by the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center, making it the only Main Street where you can take a break from shopping to watch seals frolic in an 800-gallon pool outside. 
You don’t have to pay admission to get into the aquarium’s City Treasures Gift Shop (enter behind the fountain, 431 E. Main St., 631-208-9200, <a href="https://www.longislandaquarium.com/">longislandaquarium.com</a>) to browse authentic shark-tooth souvenirs, T-shirts, plush toys and jewelry, and more. Or buy a gift certificate that can be used toward admission, special events, shopping and membership. 
"We try to bring some holiday cheer throughout the aquarium with trees decorated with multicolored lights and butterfly decorations," said aquarium spokeswoman Darlene Puntillo. 
The downtown makeover is underway with two vacant Main Street buildings recently demolished and another being renovated to house the Long Island Science Center. The town square project "is going to be a real game changer for Riverhead," said Liz O’Shaughnessy, executive director of the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce. 
Riverhead’s growing diversity is evident at Pasarela Party and Rentals, opened six years ago by Irma Cantarero. "I like the area because there are a lot of people visiting the park," Cantarero said of nearby Peconic Riverfront Park. 
Old-time Riverhead can still be seen in the Main Street Historic District, added in 2012 to the National Register of Historic Places. One of the oldest landmarks, Riverhead United Methodist Church, built in 1869 for a congregation organized in the 1830s, according to its website. Two cultural institutions are also of historic note: The Suffolk County Historical Society (300 W. Main St., 631-727-2881, <a href="https://www.suffolkcountyhistoricalsociety.org/index.html">suffolkcountyhistoricalsociety.org</a>), where the exhibit, "Seeking Sanctuary: 125 Years of Synagogues on Long Island," runs through Dec. 23; and Art Deco Suffolk Theater (118 E. Main St., 631-727-4343, <a href="https://www.suffolktheater.com">suffolktheater.com</a>). The theater presents WLNG’s Rockabilly Christmas on Dec. 10, and A Lords of 52nd Street Christmas, from the Billy Joel tribute band, on Dec. 17. 
Not historic but a blast from the past is Sunday Records (125 Roanoke Ave., Riverhead, 631-599-3918; open Sundays only). Brian Volkman, an attorney, opened the store four years ago to recreate the 1970s and ’80s experience of walking into a record store to flip through new and used albums. 
"My store has a lot of new releases," Volkman said. But, he added, "the main focus is on Classic Rock." 
He estimates his collection at 12,000 to 14,000 records, including LPs and 45s. "I try to get people to really get lost among the crates and find something they never expected to find," Volkman said.

Another store encouraging serendipitous browsing: Privet’s Consignment Warehouse (54 E. Main St., 631-740-9700), an offshoot of Privet Estate Sales that recently opened in a two-floor, 12,000-square-foot space overflowing with furniture, antiques, décor, rugs, paintings (including original works of art), glassware and lots more. 
"The store has very high-quality furniture," said Lori Feilen of Orient, a Realtor shopping for furniture to stage open houses for home sales. 
"We try to keep it interesting and eclectic," owner Kristen Hanyo said of the inventory, which arrives from Hamptons estate sales that have been cut back because of homeowners’ pandemic concerns. 
Riverhead is also home to craft breweries, making it a convenient locale for the Holiday Hop craft spirits crawl, Dec. 3 from 6 to 9 p.m.. "If you want, you can wear an ugly sweater or dress as an elf," O’Shaughnessy said. 
The annual holiday parade steps off at 3 p.m. Dec. 11 at Osborn Avenue and West Main Street, heading to Peconic Riverfront Park for a crackling bonfire, free hot chocolate drinks and visits with Santa from 5 to 7 p.m.; details at <a href="https://www.downtownriverhead.org/">downtownriverhead.org</a>.

Green Earth Natural Foods Market (50 E. Main St., <a href="http://genfm.com/">genfm.com</a>). Browse this brimming shop for personal care and aromatherapy products, books, scented bar soap and incense burners. 
Griffing Hardware (136 W. Main St., 631-727-2805). Sleds, strings of Christmas lights (and replacement bulbs), tree stands and Duraflame logs are sold alongside hardware at the store founded in 1931. "The customers like our personal service and product knowledge," said owner Timothy Griffing Jr. 
Barth’s Drug Store (32 E. Main St., 631-727-2125). Aisles at the front of the pharmacy are stocked with Melissa &amp; Doug Toys, games and greeting cards.

Holiday Shopping Destination: Riverhead embraces diversity, elegance

Rockville Centre’s downtown is a one-stop shopping destination boasting independent gift shops and service providers, fine-dining restaurants, cheerful pubs and special events to enhance the holiday mood. 
"It’s a very walkable community," said Mayor Francis X. Murray, who estimates the village has about 100 restaurants. "We also have ice cream shops, a tailor and new stores," he said. 
Adrienne Carr-Gathman of Baldwin was shopping downtown on a recent afternoon. "I really try to shop locally," Carr-Gathman explained as she stopped at Button &amp; Notion Center, owned and operated for 35 years by Young and Sung Yoo. 
"These are the loveliest, warmest, most caring people, and they do beautiful work," said Carr-Gathman, who was seeking new buttons for an Armani jacket. "I’ve gotten antique buttons here that don’t exist anywhere else," she said. 
The village's big holiday events this year include a Hanukkah celebration and Menorah lighting at 4:15 p.m. on Nov. 29 at Rockville Centre Recreation Center (111 N. Oceanside Rd., 516-678-9238, <a href="https://www.rvcny.gov/recreation">rvcny.gov/recreation</a>). A Christmas tree lighting, featuring high school performers and Santa, takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 2 at the village green on Maple Avenue. 
Most village-sponsored events take place outdoors; at indoor events, masks are strongly encouraged, said Deputy Mayor Kathy Baxley. 
The heart of downtown, conveniently near the Long Island Rail Road station, hugs several blocks around Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road. If you drive, downtown parking is free on the Friday after Thanksgiving and Saturdays through December. 
"Everyone’s looking forward to getting the holiday season underway," said Brian Croutier, president of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce. About two dozen shops will be participating in the chamber’s annual Snowman Hunt, an Elf on a Shelf-inspired contest from Small Business Saturday, Nov. 27, through Dec. 22. The village is bringing back its holiday lights contest, which featured 80 homes when it debuted last year. For holiday gift-hunting, Matty’s Toy Stop (284 Sunrise Hwy., Rockville Centre, 516-634-0030) is a good place to start. It’s a colorful old-fashioned toy store selling anything from trendy items (Peppa Pig, Fidget spinners) to classic board games (Scrabble, Clue, The Game of Life and multiple versions of Monopoly; who knew there was a "Frozen II" Monopoly?). 
"They have every kind of board game imaginable," said Rich Visco of Oceanside, who stopped in Matty’s with his wife, Stephanie, to pick up a last-minute gift. 
Richard Frenger, 58, a shop owner who has lived in Rockville Centre for 17 years, said the village’s shops offer "things that you don’t see anywhere else. Every individual store has its own personality." 
One of the more personality-plus shops is Time for Karma, a metaphysical boutique (14 S. Village Ave., Rockville Centre, 516-442-3200, <a href="https://atimeforkarma.com/">atimeforkarma.com</a>. The shop specializes in gemstones, jewelry, crystals and more. Necklaces and bracelets are sold with cards stating "what the gift can bring into your life, whether it’s love or healing," explained shop owner Vonda Wells. "This is a healing place for a lot of people," she said of her shop. 
Imported Irish goods are the specialty at Kathleen’s of Donegal (8 N. Park Ave., 516-536-9616, <a href="https://irishgiftsofrvc.com/">irishgiftsofrvc.com</a>), owned and operated for more than three decades by the Alcock family. Alexis Alcock, whose father, Patrick, and grandmother, the eponymous Kathleen, own the store, was behind the counter on a recent afternoon. Popular items include Irish caps, shawls and capes. Among the best-sellers: claddagh rings, which are popular anniversary, 18th birthday and Christmas gifts, and "represent love, loyalty and friendship," Alexis said. The shop also carries rosaries, Celtic crosses and other religious items.

"My wife is a tailor who can make alternations and do the sewing if something is difficult for you." 
Top To Bottom Window Treatments (246B Sunrise Hwy., 516-313-9025). The shop Richard Frenger opened in October 2020 with his spouse, Julio Hernandez, makes custom pillows, duvets, lumbar pillows and other items for the home.
