Four separate weekend brush fires in eastern Suffolk County are&nbsp;believed to have been sparked by embers from a family&nbsp;attempting to make s'mores Saturday morning in their Manorville&nbsp;backyard,&nbsp;Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina&nbsp;said Monday. 
Police had previously assigned 25 detectives, along with arson investigators, to search for the origin of the fires, which Catalina said in a statement has been preliminarily ruled as "accidental." 
A family living on North Cozine Road,&nbsp;Catalina said, had been trying to make the gooey snack at 9:30 a.m. Saturday but gave up and went inside after attempting to light some cardboard. The fire, he said, eventually ignited, but the family was unaware. 
<h2>'Horrific situation'</h2> 
"By the time they were aware of it, it was a full-blown fire, so that's when the Center Moriches Fire Department responded to put it out," Catalina said at a news conference in Shirley. "But unfortunately, some of it had probably escaped already." 
Efforts by Newsday to locate the family on Monday were not successful. Suffolk police did not respond to questions about how the family was cooking the s'mores. 
The street is at the border of Center Moriches. Police are continuing to speak with witnesses and investigate tips. 
Suffolk is not pursuing any liability costs from the family, said county spokesman Michael Martino. The county does not yet have an estimate for the overall damage caused by the brush fires, he said. 
Marie Baumann, who has lived on North Cozine Road for three&nbsp;years, said she noticed smoke behind one of her neighbors'&nbsp;homes at around 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, but initially thought it might be a backed-up chimney. 
She expressed frustration Monday after learning that a morning campfire treat from a neighbor was likely responsible for the fires,&nbsp;arguing it amounts to "just carelessness." 
"This is the pine barrens," she said. "The trees are dead, so a little spark and ... you could cause a horrific situation and that’s what happened." 
All four fires thought to have been sparked by the backyard blaze — the Westhampton fire, and fires in Center Moriches, East Moriches and Eastport — are 100% contained, county officials said. 
Firefighters early Monday returned&nbsp;to the area&nbsp;blackened by the Westhampton fire,&nbsp;which measured 2 miles long and 2½ miles wide&nbsp;and covered&nbsp;400 acres,&nbsp;to finish plowing the firebreaks and to knock down any potential hot spots, officials said. 
The process of containing the fires involved building 10-foot breaks around their full perimeters, meaning combustible materials and elements were&nbsp;removed to prevent the fires&nbsp;from reigniting and spreading. 
Police and fire officials said 40 mph winds carried embers from the backyard on North Cozine Road. They&nbsp;sparked&nbsp;fires at about 1 p.m. on Saturday&nbsp;in Center Moriches, East Moriches, Eastport and Westhampton, the officials said. 
The first fire was reported just south of Sunrise Highway in Center Moriches at 12:57 p.m., police said, somewhere around an eighth to a quarter of a mile from the Cozine Road house. 
The other fires began on Chapman Boulevard in East Moriches, off County Road 111 in Eastport and in the Westhampton area. 
Suffolk County Executive Edward P. Romaine said the fires&nbsp;came close to jumping to the north side of Sunrise Highway as they did during the Sunrise Fire in 1995. 
"The black clouds from the fire could be seen from Connecticut," Romaine said. "They were ominous. I cannot tell you what a humbling experience it is when you're in need of help, when the fires are burning. You see one fire truck after another pull up and people from all over this county, rushing into danger&nbsp;to stop this fire." 
Two firefighters suffered minor burns while battling the fires and they were both released from the hospital, according to Suffolk County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services Commissioner Rudy Sunderman. 
<h2>'Looked like a tornado'</h2> 
Two commercial buildings in the area&nbsp;sustained damages, including&nbsp;AutoGate Systems on Old Riverhead Road, an automatic driveway gate business that has been there for two decades. 
Company owner Mark Cirillo, 65, of Southampton, recalled smelling&nbsp;smoke Saturday afternoon and seeing the&nbsp;wind-whipped fire&nbsp;fast approaching through the forest. 
"I walked outside and there was what looked like a tornado. It was a cloud cover that whipped up out of the woods," Cirillo said. "I couldn't see fire. I just saw smoke, and it just grew in scale and size and just covered this property." 
Cirillo said he ran back inside to get keys to start moving vehicles, but flames quickly engulfed a truck used for storage. 
"The fire was here, and within a few seconds, it just exploded, and the fire basically engulfed the entire property," Cirillo said. "It went over the building and burned behind us." 
The blaze devoured a paint shop, storage building, sheds and vehicles, but the building's main office were saved&nbsp;by responding firefighters, he said. 
"I can't tell you why the fire swept all around the building, on all sides, including over the roof, and the building is still here," Cirillo said. 
Also relieved on Monday was Mary Crosby, president and chief executive of East End Hospice. 
The fires came up to the parking lot of the&nbsp;company's headquarters, located on Westhampton-River Road in Westhampton Beach, destroying a storage container containing medical records — most of those records are now digitized — and a dumpster, Crosby said. 
But the&nbsp;main building, which was vacant Saturday with the exception of a maintenance employee who&nbsp;escaped without injury, did not sustain any damage, she said. 
"We were very lucky," Crosby said. "We had burn spots on every side of our building." 
No patients are housed at the building, which is used to coordinate the care of hundreds of individuals, Crosby said. All employees were back at work Monday. 
<h2>Calmer conditions&nbsp;forecast</h2> 
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Sunday announced an immediate "burn ban" for all of Long Island and&nbsp;New York City, and for parts of the Hudson Valley. The ban prohibits igniting any outdoor fires to remove brush or debris, as well any uncontained campfires or open fires for cooking. 
Backyard firepits and contained campfires that are less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter are allowed, as are small, contained cooking fires. 
The annual statewide ban on residential brush burning takes effect March 16. 
The calmer weather on Monday cooperated with first responders, with a decrease in wind gust speeds&nbsp;and lower humidity decreasing the likelihood the brush fires could flare up again, said Joe Pollina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton. 
Long Island is not forecast for any rainfall until Sunday, while winds are expected to stay calm through Friday, added Bryan Ramsey, another Weather Service meteorologist.

Macy's announced Thursday it will close 66&nbsp;locations nationwide, including three&nbsp;on Long Island and&nbsp;five in New York City,&nbsp;citing the stores'&nbsp;financial struggles. 
The three Long Island&nbsp;stores closing include&nbsp;the retailer's&nbsp;Backstage discount locations at the Lake Success Shopping Center in New Hyde Park and in Melville on Walt Whitman Road and a department store&nbsp;in the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa.&nbsp; 
A notice was posted on each of the three stores&nbsp;Thursday evening&nbsp;notifying shoppers of&nbsp;the impending closures.&nbsp; 
It was not immediately clear when the Long Island stores would shutter but a <a href="https://s202.q4cdn.com/285121676/files/doc_downloads/investors/FY-2024-Year-End-Closures-1-9-2025.pdf" target="_blank">list</a>&nbsp; posted online by the retailer stipulated that most of the closures would occur in the first quarter of 2025. 
"Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go — forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service," said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. 
A&nbsp;restructuring&nbsp;plan, <a href="https://www.newsday.com/business/macys-fourthquarter-tony-spring-investor-160-stores-otfigs79">announced</a> by Macy's in February 2024, called for the closure of 150 "unproductive" stores over a three-year period while continuing with 350 locations nationwide. 
New York City locations set to close include Macy's Backstage&nbsp;Queens&nbsp;Place in Elmhurst, Macy's Brooklyn Downtown, Macy's Backstage Sheepshead Bay,&nbsp;Macy's Staten Island Furniture and Mattress Gallery and&nbsp;Macy's Backstage Fordham Place in the Bronx. A ninth store in New York State, Macy's Mall at Greece Ridge Center in Rochester, is also shutting down. 
There are seven full-fledged Macy’s stores on Long Island — at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, Hampton Bays Plaza, Roosevelt Field in Uniondale, Smith Haven Mall in Lake Grove, South Shore Mall in Bay Shore,&nbsp;Walt Whitman Shops in Huntington and on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset.

A gift card went missing from the Amagansett School before Christmas break in 2023 — and now the school's principal could lose her job over it. 
The district is trying to fire Principal Maria Dorr after accusing the longtime educator of stealing the card. District officials have said in disciplinary proceedings that she broke the trust of the school community. 
But Dorr, who was never criminally charged, has denied she stole the card. Her attorneys called&nbsp;the allegations “scandalous, defamatory&nbsp;and without merit.” They asked: Why would an educator of 25 years with an “unblemished record” steal a gift card worth $50 or less, putting her career and reputation in jeopardy? 
After seven hearings — with more than 42 hours of testimony and&nbsp;15 witnesses — the case could soon have a resolution. Attorneys for both sides filed post-hearing&nbsp;briefs on Jan. 17 and a state-designated hearing officer is expected to issue a decision within 30 days. 
The hearing officer, Timothy Taylor, instructed the witnesses not to speak about the case. But unlike most disciplinary hearings, Dorr chose to make hers public. This has allowed a rare glimpse into a process that is typically shielded from the public eye. 
Newsday reviewed more than 1,000 pages of hearing transcripts and a reporter attended the last two hearings. What has emerged are different interpretations of what took place on the Friday the card went missing and what followed. 
<h2>Administrative charges filed</h2> 
The Amagansett school system is one of the smallest on Long Island, with about 120 students in prekindergarten through sixth grade, all housed in one building.&nbsp; 
So when an Amazon gift card in a red envelope disappeared on Dec. 15, 2023, the news ran through the district "like fire," as one attorney put it during the hearings. 
A parent and her child, a student, brought the card to school as a gift for occupational therapist Christina McElroy. According to testimony, a receptionist&nbsp;placed the card in McElroy's&nbsp;mailbox but when she checked it, the card was nowhere to be found. 
An investigation ensued and Richard Loeschner, then the district's interim&nbsp;superintendent, determined that Dorr had taken it.&nbsp;Dorr, 51, who earned $215,764 in 2023-24, was suspended with pay&nbsp;last January. In&nbsp;February, Loeschner filed administrative charges against her, accusing her of misconduct in a disciplinary proceeding known as 3020-a. 
McElroy, meanwhile,&nbsp;reported the card missing to East Hampton police last January, according to an incident report Newsday obtained.&nbsp;Police chief Michael Sarlo said McElroy later notified the investigating officer that she wanted the&nbsp;case to be closed. Sarlo said his agency took no further action. 
The district's disciplinary case continued, and from July through November, attorneys for the district and Dorr presented their cases to Taylor. <h2>The district's case</h2> 
The district’s key witness was Loeschner, who investigated the matter. He testified at four hearings. 
At the time the card went missing, Loeschner had been working in Amagansett for a few months.&nbsp;The retired Brentwood superintendent had taken over after Superintendent Seth Turner&nbsp;left in October 2023.&nbsp; 
Loeschner’s role as Amagansett's schools chief ended&nbsp;in June and&nbsp;Michael Rodgers, a physical education teacher and former co-president of the Amagansett Teachers Association, is now superintendent.&nbsp; <a class="p-smartembed" data-attr-caption="Richard Loeschner in March 2023." data-attr-credit="Newsday" data-attr-has-caption="true" data-attr-has-credit="true" data-attr-q="0.3" data-attr-w="400" data-onecms-id="contentid/2f22c87f-d22d-4091-9bbf-4333a754b831" data-onecms-type="image" href="javascript:window.parent.actionEventData({$contentId:'contentid/2f22c87f-d22d-4091-9bbf-4333a754b831', $action:'view', $target:'work'})" polopoly:contentid="contentid/2f22c87f-d22d-4091-9bbf-4333a754b831"><img src="/image-service/alias/contentid/2f22c87f-d22d-4091-9bbf-4333a754b831/3Y4A67645101456605.jpg?w=400&amp;q=0.3">Richard Loeschner in March 2023.</a> 
Before the alleged theft, Loeschner said he had a “terrific” working relationship with Dorr and called her “a competent administrator,” according to hearing transcripts. 
But in retrospect, Loeschner said he found Dorr’s behavior after the incident “odd.” The card was reported missing on a Friday, but he said Dorr didn’t mention it to him. He first learned of it from Rodgers the following Tuesday, he said. 
He recalled telling Dorr: “When someone comes to you and says that a Christmas card was stolen, your first reaction is not to cover it up. Your first reaction is, 'Oh my God, let me look into this and see what I can do,' ” according to the transcripts. 
Much of Loeschner’s investigation centered on video camera footage that captured who went in and out of the school mailroom. 
Front desk receptionist Cassie Butts testified that on the morning of the alleged theft, the student handed her the card for McElroy.&nbsp; 
The card’s exact value was unclear, but the student's parent testified it was worth either $25 or $50. 
At 8:24 a.m., the video footage showed Butts going into the mailroom with a red envelope and leaving without one. Butts testified that she left the card in McElroy’s mailbox. 
Roughly 13 minutes later, the footage showed,&nbsp;Dorr was the next person to go into the mailroom and was seen leaving with a red envelope. 
Dana Kalbacher, Dorr’s secretary, had entered the mailroom nearly half an hour before Butts&nbsp;and the district contended that she cleared out Dorr’s mailbox, as she said she&nbsp;typically did. 
Loeschner testified that Dorr initially showed him a red Shell gift card, which he said he was "thrilled" to see because he was looking to “exonerate” her. But when he spoke to the student who&nbsp;Dorr&nbsp;believed had gifted the card, he said he learned the child hadn't given it&nbsp;to Dorr. 
Loeschner said he then learned that a sixth grade&nbsp;teacher had received a $50 Shell card from a parent who worked at the gas station in late November at a teacher-parent conference. The parent’s boyfriend testified that he and his girlfriend brought two cards to the conference and gave the second one to Dorr. 
Loeschner said Dorr later&nbsp;presented him with a red Christmas card, which she said she found in her recycling bin. Loeschner took the envelope; the greeting card inside was unsigned. 
“I had no other explanation. I chased down every possible lead Maria gave me,” Loeschner said. 
<h2>The defense's case</h2> 
Dorr’s attorney, Arthur Scheuermann, who is general counsel of the School Administrators Association of New York State in upstate Latham, called Loeschner’s investigation “shoddy.” 
Scheuermann and his co-counsel, Brian Deinhart, pointed out “inaccuracies” in dates and times in Loeschner’s report.&nbsp;The district called them “inconsistencies.” 
“The investigation was not fair, certainly was not impartial or complete,” Scheuermann said in his opening statement. “What I know from the evidence I have seen is that every aspect of the accusation and the subsequent investigation was a set-up to get Maria Dorr." 
Under cross-examination, Kalbacher, Dorr’s secretary, testified that&nbsp;she was not certain she cleared out Dorr's mailbox. She could have been distracted from chatting with a staffer&nbsp;or missed&nbsp;an envelope stuffed in the back of the mailbox, she said. 
Scheuermann and Deinhart also attacked Butts' credibility. 
According to the hearing transcripts, Deinhart cited a report in which an investigator “recommended that the administration [counsel] Ms. Butts about the various retaliatory statements” she made in 2019 against former superintendent Turner and cautioned her against “making exaggerated and/or unsubstantiated claims against School District personnel in the future." 
Loeschner said&nbsp;under questioning that he believed Butts. Butts, who retired in February, testified that she had no incentive to lie. 
Dorr’s attorneys also brought in character witnesses and introduced years of performance reviews Dorr had received&nbsp;since she became principal&nbsp;in 2015.&nbsp; 
Two parents whose children attended the school testified. One called Dorr “the heart and soul of the school” and another said&nbsp;it seemed “ludicrous” to her that Dorr would take a gift card. 
Dorr had excellent performance reviews and Amagansett in 2023 was named a Blue Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Education. Loeschner testified that to his knowledge, Dorr had no disciplinary record. 
Dorr’s attorneys also noted that she had welcomed a police investigation into the missing card. 
They suggested the alleged theft was “orchestrated” by the teachers' union. They noted it was Rodgers, then union co-president,&nbsp;who first told Loeschner of the missing card. Rodgers, according to Loeschner’s testimony, wrote down the time stamps of the video footage that showed Butts leaving the mailroom and Dorr entering it for Loeschner on a piece of paper. 
Rodgers did not testify and declined to comment. 
The final witness was Dorr herself. 
Dorr testified&nbsp;what she took out of her&nbsp;mailbox that Friday was a red envelope with an unsigned&nbsp;holiday card and a Shell gift card inside. She said she assumed the card came from the same student whose parent gave her the first Shell card at the teacher-parent conference. 
She also&nbsp;addressed what Loeschner called her odd behavior. Dorr&nbsp;recalled learning from Butts of the missing card and telling her to give it some time for the card to show up before getting the superintendent, the school board and attorneys involved. 
She noted that McElroy never reported to her that her card was missing, which McElroy confirmed&nbsp;when she testified. 
“It's a school," Dorr said. "Things go missing all the time. Books are missing. Hats are missing, gloves. … Folders are misplaced. Copies are misplaced. It happens.” 
Asked why she didn’t look into the matter the following Monday, she said, "I had another busy day. There were more pressing items that were related to the students that I prioritized that day.” 
The missing card was never found.

After 23 years in the business, Frank’s Steaks of Rockville Centre has closed. In August, the restaurant posted on its website that it was "temporarily closed while addressing building issues" but now it is officially shuttered. 
Managing partner John Casper said that on Friday&nbsp;the Village of Rockville Centre Building Department padlocked the premises and escorted him and other employees out. A planned auction for the restaurant’s fixtures and equipment is on hold. 
At issue are repairs required by the building department, who must sign off on them and who is responsible for them — the restaurant, which leases the space, or the landlord Ray Montemurro, who owns it. The two parties have been in court for more than a year, Montemurro said. 
The restaurant debuted in 2002, a satellite of the Frank’s Steaks that opened in Jericho in 1988 (<a href="https://www.newsday.com/lifestyle/restaurants/franks-steaks-jericho-epz0y8o6">and closed last year</a>). But whereas the original anchored a modest strip mall, the Rockville Centre location took over a grand, gable-roofed, three-story structure on Lincoln Avenue that, from 1972 to 1995, had been the Lincoln Inn. After a brief stint as Jessica’s, the property reverted to the Lincoln Inn and then, from 2000 to 2002, became Monte’s Steak House at the Lincoln Inn. 
Frank’s RVC, as it was commonly known, was launched by the Jericho team of Richard Gerzof and Nicholas Drossos but, in 2015, Casper and Chris Meyer, a longtime employee, bought into the business. After Drossos died in 2021, Casper became a majority owner. Meyer stepped down as general manager last year.

Long Island MacArthur Airport in Islip is becoming a busy hub for domestic destinations that are just a few hours away. “We’ve worked hard over the last decade to transform ISP from a regional airport with only six nonstop destinations served by two airlines into a thriving transportation hub served by six air carriers and offering 18 nonstop routes,” Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter said of the Ronkonkoma facility. 
Here’s a look at five new spots that are a quick plane ride away from MacArthur Airport:

Just east of Tampa, Lakeland takes its name from the 38 named lakes around which many of the city’s neighborhoods and cultural spots are built. 
Among the city’s lakes is Lake Mirror, known for its Frances Langford Promenade and Hollis Garden, a sprawling botanical garden surrounding neoclassical architecture. 
Stroll through Munn Park Historic District’s early turn of the 20th century architecture, where you can also pick up a few antiques. Architecture lovers will want to explore the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings at Florida Southern College. 
There’s a variety of theater, dance and live music and art lovers should head to the Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art, for everything from ancient artifacts to contemporary artworks. Kids of all ages can explore the interactive galleries at the Florida Children’s Museum.

In addition to a bustling downtown historic district, filled with 18th and 19th century architectural gems, there are more than 40 parks and 32 miles of trails, including 1898 Memorial Park, which explores the history of&nbsp;an 1898 coup d’etat — the only successful coup d’etat in U.S. history — in which white citizens overthrew the legally elected biracial government, killing many Black residents. There’s also 250-acre Greenfield Park, with trails and boat and kayak rentals, and Halyburton Park, with a nature and events center. 
Located in an 1883 warehouse, Wilmington Railroad Museum features interactive displays and model trains that are a hit for the whole family.

The county seat of Cabarrus County, Concord exudes historic charm.

Shop and dine at Gibson Mill, a former textile mill turned community hub or rent a Jon boat on the 534-acre Lake Fisher. 
Charlotte, the largest city in North Carolina, is a 25-minute drive from Concord. It has a thriving arts scene, including the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. 
If speed is more your need, visit Charlotte Motor Speedway for exciting NASCAR action. Nature lovers will enjoy the Carolina Thread Trail (aka “The Thread”), where you can hike or bike along a network of trails linking 15 counties in North Carolina and South Carolina.

The gunman who shot and killed an NYPD officer and three&nbsp;others at a midtown Manhattan office building Monday before killing himself was apparently seeking to target&nbsp;NFL headquarters, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday. 
The shooter left a note with his body that blamed the NFL for his mental health troubles, Adams said in an interview Tuesday. 
"He did have a note on him," Adams said on "CBS Mornings." "The note alluded to that he felt he had CTE.&nbsp;... He appeared to have blamed the NFL for his injury. The NFL headquarters is in the building. ... From our preliminary investigation, he took the wrong elevator." 
The dead include Didarul Islam, 36, an off-duty officer and father of two who was working security in the building, and three civilians. 
The gunman&nbsp;took his own life on the building's 33rd floor, shooting himself in the chest, officials said. 
Another person who was shot was in critical but stable condition, Adams said in a news conference Monday night at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. 
The NYPD has not identified the other three people who were killed. 
However, the investment management company&nbsp;Blackstone Inc., which has offices in the building,&nbsp;said&nbsp;that executive&nbsp;Wesley LePatner, 43, was one of the victims. Her roles included&nbsp;serving as the chief operating officer of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust. 
"We are heartbroken to share that our colleague, Wesley LePatner, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic incident at 345 Park Avenue. Words cannot express the devastation we feel," spokesperson Matthew Anderson said in a statement. 
"Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed," the statement said.&nbsp;"She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond. She embodied the best of Blackstone. Our prayers are with her husband, children and family. We are also saddened by the loss of the other innocent victims as well, including brave security personnel and NYPD." 
The 32BJ SEIU union identified security officer Aland Etienne as another victim. 
He was "a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely serious, union president Manny Pastreich said in a statement. 
"This tragedy speaks to the sacrifice of security officers who risk their lives every day to keep New Yorkers and our buildings safe," Pastreich said. "Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line. Their contributions to our city are essential, though often unappreciated. Aland Etienne is a New York hero. We will remember him as such." 
An NFL employee was seriously injured in the shooting, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed in a message to employees.

The commissioner said New York-based employees should work remotely today and that it would be "understandable" if they needed the day off. 
Giants coach Brian Daboll, speaking at the team's training camp on Tuesday morning, said "Our thoughts and prayers are with the people who were affected in that tragedy here with the Giants." 
Jets coach Aaron Glenn called the news “tough” to hear and process. 
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the families,” Glenn said at Jets training camp on Tuesday morning. 
The building at 345 Park Avenue was surrounded and cordoned off by police&nbsp;on Tuesday morning. It was&nbsp;still being investigated as an active crime scene, NYPD officials said. 
NYPD officers stood at the entrance to the building, which was surrounded with metal barricades. One K9 officer stood at the entrance, where a window appeared still intact but shattered from gunfire. Crime scene investigators were examining the bullet holes. 
No one was being let into the building's front entrance, and all but the most essential personnel were restricted from accessing the skyscraper, the NYPD said. 
At the news conference on Monday night, Adams hailed Islam, a&nbsp;3½-year veteran of the force, for "saving lives." 
"He was protecting New Yorkers," Adams said.&nbsp;"He's an immigrant from Bangladesh. And he loved this city. ... He was a person of faith and a person that believed in God and believed in living out the life of a Godly person. He embodies what the city is all about. Islam, who was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx, was working off-duty in a paid detail in uniform to bring in extra money for his pregnant wife and two sons, according to the commissioner. 
"He was doing the job that we asked him to do," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. "He put himself in harm's way. He made the ultimate sacrifice, shot in cold blood, wearing a uniform that stood for the promise that he made to this city; he died as he lived, a hero." 
Gov. Kathy Hochul said flags across the state would be at half-staff until the victims' funerals. She also, in a statement, renewed her calls for federal action against assault weapons. 
"The killer used an AR-15–style assault rifle. The same weapon of war used in mass shootings across America," Hochul said in a statement on Tuesday.&nbsp;" ... The time to act is now. The American people are tired of thoughts and prayers. They deserve action. Congress must summon the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and finally pass a national assault weapons ban before more innocent lives are stolen." 
The suspect was identified as Shane Tamura, 27, of Nevada. 
He carried a three-page handwritten document found folded up in his wallet, an NYPD spokesman said. 
On page 1, the note said “"CTE- Study my brain please.. I am sorry. Tell Rick I'm sorry," according to the spokesman. 
That was followed by a second page saying: "Terry Long. . Football gave me CTE and it cause me to drink a gallon of antifreeze. You can't go against the NFL. They squash you." 
The final page read: "Please study brain for CTE. I'm Sorry. The League knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits. They failed us." 
Las Vegas authorities told NYPD officials Monday that Tamura has a "documented mental health history,"&nbsp;Tisch said.

Law enforcement officials located identification on Tamura’s body, including a concealed-carry permit from Las Vegas, sources said. 
"We believe this to be a lone shooter, and there is no longer an active threat to the public," Tisch said on Monday. 
Tamura, who had driven from Las Vegas over the past two days, double-parked his BMW outside 345 Park Ave. just before 6:30 p.m., and walked alone into the building, Tisch said. 
Tamura turned to the right immediately after entering the lobby and opened fire on Islam, she said. Tamura continued to spray gunfire around the lobby, killing the security officer and two other victims, the commissioner said. 
At the elevator bank, Tamura allowed a woman exiting an elevator to flee and he rode the elevator to the 33rd floor, where Rudin Management, a real estate company, has its office. 
The shooter opened fired on a woman, killing her, and then walked to the end of the hallway, where he took his own life, shooting himself in the chest, Tisch said. 
Four other victims are being treated for minor injuries sustained in their attempts to flee the scene, Tisch said. 
The commissioner said the BMW, registered to Tamura in Las Vegas, traveled cross country over the past few days. It was spotted in Colorado on Saturday, in Nebraska on Sunday and in New Jersey around 4:30 p.m. on Monday just before entering Manhattan. 
Police found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded handgun, magazines loaded with ammunition, a backpack and prescription medication for Tamura. The building was checked and cleared for explosives by the NYPD's Bomb Squad. 
In addition to the NFL and Blackstone Inc., the building houses the&nbsp;multinational accounting firm KPMG, Deutsche Bank, JPMorgan Chase and the consulate general of Ireland. 
After midnight&nbsp;on Tuesday outside the city morgue, over 100 NYPD officers and FDNY firefighters assembled on East 30th Street, ready to salute the transfer of Islam's body from the hospital to the medical examiner.&nbsp;Adams and representatives of the PBA&nbsp;were among those paying tribute. 
Dozens of police vehicles joined the procession accompanying Islam's body&nbsp;downtown. A stretch of First Avenue was closed for about a dozen blocks. 
Islam’s body — wrapped in the NYPD’s green, white and blue flag — was carried out of an NYPD ambulance into the medical examiner’s office. Officers and firefighters saluted. 
Earlier, as the scene was active inside the skyscraper, TV footage showed lines of people evacuating the office building with their hands above their heads 
Just before 7:45 p.m., Park Avenue north of 48th Street was shut down to drivers — and north of 49th Street to everyone else — while commuters, tourists, pedestrians and other passersby looked north past the Waldorf-Astoria toward the shooting scene. Police helicopters and hundreds of officers from the NYPD, MTA police, state police and other agencies stood on the street. 
The National Guard, in fatigues, helped cordon off the area. Ambulances and FDNY vehicles were parked along Park Avenue. 
Henry Rosenberg, 25, of Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood, was shopping in midtown when he heard the police response. 
"It’s pretty crazy, surreal to see in midtown Manhattan. I thought it was possibly Trump or a diplomat coming through when I saw the police cars," he said. 
Then he opened up the Citizen app and saw it was an attack, and learned it was at the building that houses Blackstone, where his high school friend from Maryland works in real estate acquisition. He texted the friend and found out he was all right.

A nor’easter will batter Long Island with high winds, several inches of rain and coastal flooding, dampening hopes of those pining for a three-day fall weekend — not to mention Columbus Day paradegoers and those putting up early Halloween decorations — the National Weather Service has forecast. 
The rain and wind could begin as early as Saturday evening, according to the weather service, but the most dangerous impacts will begin on Sunday. 
The weather service issued a high wind watch from Sunday at noon through 6 a.m. Monday, according to the brief. The strongest gusts could blow at 60 mph Sunday afternoon and evening. 
"The combination of the wet ground and the winds, especially since a lot of the trees still have leaves on them, we could see potential for trees and power lines to fall in the peak of the winds ... Saturday afternoon through Sunday night," meteorologist Brian Ciemnecki said late Friday. "Anyone that has their Halloween decorations out, those could obviously be ... blowing away." 
The weather service has issued a coastal flood warning from noon on Sunday through 6 p.m. Monday for southern Nassau County and southwestern Suffolk County. 
The agency advised residents that moderate widespread or "locally major" flooding could close&nbsp;roadways and flood lawns, basements and even the first floors of homes and businesses along the water. 
Flooding could also extend inland along bays and rivers, and even to "some areas that typically don’t see flooding," the weather service’s Friday evening briefing on the storm reads. 
Widespread beach flooding and dune erosion could occur during Sunday and Monday high tides, the National Weather Service said. Waves between 3 and 6 feet could impact the North Shore. Even taller waves could splash over and flood roadways and shoreline properties in Orient Point, the agency warned. 
A total of around 1½ to 3 inches of rain will probably&nbsp;fall across the island between Sunday morning and Monday evening, according to an agency brief issued Friday evening. Localized flooding due to drainage issues is also likely. 
In a statement issued Friday, Gov. Kathy Hochul urged "all New Yorkers to stay alert, watch the forecast closely, and take steps now to prepare. 
"Conditions can change quickly, so please use caution if you need to travel and check on friends and neighbors who may need extra help," Hochul continued. "Staying vigilant and informed will help keep everyone safe through the weekend." 
Fire Island Ferries service will be suspended from 1 p.m. Sunday through Monday, and the Fire Island Water Taxi will not offer transportation on Sunday and Monday. 
The Village of Babylon announced residents can park in Babylon municipal lots should they wish to move cars from areas that might flood. Officials also encouraged boat owners to check boat lines and make certain everything is secure at their boat slip.
