Newsday took home a pair of awards at Sunday night's 55th Annual New York Emmy Awards.
"Marisa: A Little Girl's Fight to Live," a multimedia presentation on Newsday.com about 5-year-old Bayport resident Marisa Carney's struggle with a rare, life-threatening disease, won in the Documentary category.
Another Web-based project, "9/11 A Decade Later," won the Interactivity award. It documented the lives of families who lost loved ones in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.
Newsday multimedia editor Arnold Miller, who was honored for his role in both winning projects, praised photographer and editor Alejandra Villa for her work on the Marisa project.
"Alejandra was able to document not just the trials of having a daughter with this condition but also the love, and the hope that this family has that this girl is going to be OK," Miller said.
Debby Krenek, Newsday's editorial director, lauded her staff for both awards. "I'm so incredibly proud of the talented journalists who won for telling two important stories," Krenek said.
The award for the Sept. 11 project was given to Miller, who produced it, as well as photographers Christopher Ware, Michael Roy and Jim Staubitser; editors Daryl Thomen and Matthew Golub; reporters Ridgely Ochs and Chau Lam; interactive editor Mark Dwyer; database programmer David Holland; and designer Michael Aguggia.
