Designer handbags, new and used, from Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and Coach. Fish tank supplies and jewelry. A vintage sewing machine, iPads, bicycles, cameras, dehumidifiers and KitchenAid mixers.

Those are some of the items to be auctioned to the public on Wednesday, May 13, by the Suffolk County Police Department, according to a listing flyer. The auction begins 9 a.m. at 30 Yaphank Ave., in Yaphank.

Another property auction is scheduled for Oct. 22, the department’s website says. There are also vehicle impound auctions scheduled for June 13, Sept. 26 and Nov. 21.

The department’s auctions sell, to the highest bidder, property that has been lost, is stolen and unclaimed, or seized as a result of civil asset forfeiture.

The items are sold " 'as is,' 'with faults,' and no warranties, express or implied," the flyer says.

The Suffolk police press office declined to provide a breakdown of how the property came to be available for auction.

"There is no itemized breakdown for each item and where it came from, the legal route it took etc. Not every item is part of a criminal case. Some is unclaimed property. Also, there are no values assigned to the items. Some are new, some are used," the press office wrote.

A 2024 report by the county comptroller’s office found that in some cases, recovered stolen property that had gone unclaimed was sold at police auction without the department establishing that it had the right to sell it yet. The report also found other problems with the procedures at the auction.
