Active shooter video required viewing for county workers

Following the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California, in which 14 government workers were shot to death, the administration of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has ordered all county employees to watch a video that teaches them how to remain safe.

An all-employees memo sent last month by Chief Deputy County Executive Dennis Cohen requires all workers to watch the video, “Surviving an Active Shooter Event,” and satisfactorily complete a questionnaire. Cohen said the video, developed by the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department, is the first initiative while Suffolk “researches additional training options.”

“The likelihood of any of us being involved in a mass shooting event remains incredibly low,” Cohen wrote. But he said the video will ensure “our employees are well-educated and familiar with what to do” in such a situation.
