Adam Haber loaned $795G to his Senate campaign, records show

Democratic State Senate candidate Adam Haber has loaned his campaign $795,000 since late September in the race for the open 7th District seat, according to new State Board of Elections filings.
Haber, an East Hills businessman, loaned his campaign $467,500 between Oct. 4 and Oct. 21, according to the candidate’s 11-day pre-general election filing. Last month, Haber loaned his campaign $327,500, records show.
Haber, a Roslyn school board member, faces Republican Elaine Phillips, mayor of the Village of Flower Hill, on Nov. 8.
Haber spokesman Jonathan Heppner called the candidate a “successful businessman who has served his community for over a decade,” and who “will continue to only be committed to putting Long Island first and protecting Nassau’s taxpayers.”
The Haber campaign has $305,146 on hand for the final days of the campaign.
Senate Republican spokesman Scott Reif said Haber was “trying to buy himself” the Senate seat.
“Voters are smart, and they’re going to choose Elaine Phillips, a strong and independent leader for Long Island who will get results for our hardworking taxpayers and their families,” Reif said.
In July, Haber forgave more than $1.3 million in personal loans from his 2014 campaign for the same Senate seat, election records show. Haber lost that race to Sen. Jack Martins (R-Old Westbury), who is vacating the seat to run for Congress.
Board of Election filings also show the Senate Republican Campaign Committee transferred nearly $737,000 to Phillips’ campaign in the race’s final weeks. She has $53,110 on hand.
Haber on Monday also received the endorsement of Democratic U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, who cited Haber’s support for women’s reproductive rights.
“I strongly endorse Adam for State Senate because he will work to empower women, fight to lower taxes for families and be a partner in building strong local schools,” Gillibrand said.
Phillips on Friday received the backing of the Public Employees Federation, the state’s second-largest public employee union.
“Our dedicated public employees work hard to provide the services that citizens and taxpayers need and rely on, and I am proud and honored to have their support,” Phillips said.
