Cross-endorsement deal for judges reached in Nassau
Nassau Republicans and Democrats announced a cross-endorsement deal for State Supreme Court justices Tuesday, building on an agreement reached by the parties in 2014.
Under the deal, the parties will endorse two Democrats in November to fill a pair of vacancies. Next year, Democrats would back two Republican incumbents for re-election, said Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs.
This year’s candidates are Edmund Dane, supervising judge of Nassau’s Family Court, and Joseph Lorintz, principal law clerk to State Supreme Court Justice Randy Sue Marber.
They will replace Margaret Reilly, a Republican elected to the Surrogate Court, and Democrat Hope Zimmerman, who reached mandatory retirement age of 70.
Dane and Lorintz declined to comment Tuesday.
Jacobs called the deal with Nassau GOP Chairman Joseph Mondello “even and fair.” “It has been excellent experience working across party lines with Chairman Mondello to ensure that only quality candidates reach the bench and that outstanding judges remain on the bench,” he said.
John Ryan, attorney for Nassau Republicans, confirmed the cross-endorsements.
Republicans and Democrats will hold their bicounty Supreme Court nominating conventions Wednesday.
