Not enrolled in a political party
BACKGROUND
- Wilder, 58, of Riverhead, is not registered with a party and is running on the Voter Options party line in the general election.
- She is an educator and writer who has been a teacher and teaching assistant, temporary office worker and a coordinator of PeaceSmiths Inc., a Long Island-based peace, justice and environmental advocacy nonprofit.
- Wilder graduated from Sachem High School in 1986. She received a bachelor’s degree in English in 1990 from Roanoke College in Virginia. In 2017, she received a master's degree in teaching English as a Second Language from Stony Brook University.
ISSUES
- Wilder said that if elected she would support state legislation encouraging local governments to pass laws limiting what she called the harm done by ICE when immigration agents are in communities. She said she also wants localities to make police aware of when ICE is in an area.
- She said she would support laws restricting what personal information could be shared with large corporations “so you won’t go to the roller rink and have to give your child’s birth date.” Such laws, Wilder said, would bar corporations from requesting or storing personal data that could be sold to other entities.
- Wilder said she would support local groups focused on the Brookhaven landfill, which is scheduled to close in two years, and other water-quality issues. She also said she would support policies requiring large corporations to conserve water use. “I think we should [ask] corporations, especially big-box stores, to limit how much they water their grass,” she said.
