  • He was Suffolk County executive from 1988 to 1991, and served 17 years on the Suffolk County Water Authority Board, most recently as chairman from 2018 to 2023. He also was a Suffolk County legislator from 1979 to 1982 and a New York State assemblyman from 1982 to 1987.

ISSUES

  • Halpin said he is “running to get things done,” listing affordability as one of his top priorities if elected. He said the cost of living on Long Island is “out of control” and that he will “fight for trade policies that protect American workers and manufacturing without driving up costs for working families.”
  • He said he supports expanding Medicare so that those who want to buy into the program for their healthcare coverage can do so, while also allowing those who prefer their private insurer to keep their coverage.
  • He touts his work with the Town of Babylon IDA and planning board when noting he will push for federal policies that support the development of more housing for young adults, seniors and families, and the redevelopment of empty shopping plazas and office parks into community-friendly destinations.
