Erin King Sweeney, media star

Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney appears on her way to becoming a media star.

The Republican from Wantagh, whose father is Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford), is starring in a public service announcement airing on Optimum and the Fox network that promotes Long Island Girl Scouts.

Two weeks ago, she appeared on Fox 5’s “Good Day Street Talk” to discuss women’s issues for Women’s History Month.

After filming Tuesday morning at Baldwin High School, she will be seen and heard in another PSA in about two weeks for the Baldwin Fire Department, supporting its membership drive. Those PSAs are to appear on Optimum and Verizon FiOS, and on local ABC and CBS television and radio affiliates.

King Sweeney credits town board employee Kendall Lampkin, who once worked in President Ronald Reagan’s White House, for getting her the airtime.

In the Girl Scouts commercial, King Sweeney reads to a group of 8- and 9-year-old girls, telling them that great women in American history were airplane pilots, like Amelia Earhart and Elinor Smith.

The appearance “was for Women’s History Month, women in aviation, because I’m an aviation lawyer,” King Sweeney said. “I was able to talk to the little girls about the importance of aviation history. It was fun.”

Was she paid?

“Maybe a Thin Mint,” King Sweeney joked.

King Sweeney’s name has been suggested for county executive, but she said she has two children, 8 and 12 years old, who come first.

“If they make that a part-time job, yes,” she said of county executive. “Otherwise, no.”

Still, after all this publicity, the question arises as to whether King Sweeney is looking to follow in the footsteps of her father and run for Congress.

“No, no, no,” she said, laughing.
