Huntington Republicans are trying to enlist former three-time congressional contender Grant Lally to run against Suffolk Legis. William Spencer (D-Centerport) in November.

Toni Tepe, Huntington GOP chairwoman, said Lally, 53, of Lloyd Harbor, who practices civil law in Mineola, is weighing a campaign and agreed to give the GOP his answer within several days.

He'd be a good candidate, said Tepe, saying Lally ran well in parts of the town which are in the 18th legislative district, in his loss last year to nine-term Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington).

Lally won a Republican primary by only seven votes for the right to take on Israel, but lost 90,032-74,269 in the general election.

Earlier, Lally made two unsuccessful runs against former Rep. Gary Ackerman, a Democrat, in 1994 and 1996. Lally also worked for George W. Bush in the Florida presidential recount and on Irish-American issues.

Lally said he is undecided about a run and plans to speak to Suffolk GOP chairman John Jay LaValle about a possible candidacy.
